Umbilical Cord Stem Cells and Multipotency

The Steenblock Research Institute has been working with other scientists to develop safe and effective stem cells from cord blood. First the cord is from a healthy newborn baby of healthy parents. Second, only cords with type O (universal donor) blood are used for stem cell transplants. Third, the cord blood is tested according to American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) standards and tested for purity and potency with advanced technologies. Fourth, the stem cells are separated from the blood, further reducing cell antigens. Fifth, the stem cells are expanded so that several million stem cells can be given per treatment.
