Stem Cells and Immune Function

T-lymphocytes do the hand to hand combat while B-cells make bullets (antibodies) that kill the invading organisms. Umbilical cord blood stem cells will develop into T and B lymphocytes when injected into a patient whose immune system had been damaged or is failing to work effectively due to disease or aging. In addition, stem cells help the damaged immune system of a patient treated with chemotherapy and/or radiation. Stem cells should also be used in combination with other new immune therapies in the battle against cancer.
