Stem Cells and Radiation

With the threat of nuclear war on the rise, there is one small ray of sunshine in this arena. Stem cells appear to be quite useful in repairing the damage inflicted by radiation and nuclear fallout.

When two groups of mice were exposed to lethal doses of radiation, the group of mice that received a single injection of human umbilical cord blood stem cells survived, whereas the other group did not. Hopefully someday soon, stem cells will be generally available to treat diseases and promote health rather than being therapies for war and destruction.
